Investigations and Recovery Services Team

The Absolute Investigations and Recovery Services Team is made up of more than 45 individuals with 1,000 years of combined experience in law enforcement, of which 250 years is in command and management. While many team members came to Absolute after a full career in law enforcement, others have led varied careers including work with the FBI, the Marines, the US Army, Homeland Security and government positions.

The team has proven capabilities with internet investigations, computer forensics and cyber crime. They are featured speakers at public engagements on topics ranging from regulatory matters to legal issues around data privacy and computer crime.

The team's legal expertise is based on years of experience in the prosecution of organised and computer crimes, including the drafting of legislation related to computers and technology. Areas of specialty include extensive knowledge of the legal landscape in North America as well as regulatory matters and data privacy laws in other countries.

How We Work with Law Enforcement

The Absolute Investigations and Recovery Services Team assists law enforcement professionals in securing search warrants and making arrests. Once we know a device is missing, the Investigative Services Team launches an investigation, forensically mining the computer using a variety of procedures including key captures, registry and file scanning, geolocation and other investigative techniques to determine who has the device, where it is and what is being done with it.

In addition to recovery of lost devices, our investigations often lead to intelligence on related criminality. Our investigations have led to additional charges in parole violations, robbery, felony theft, automobile burglary, commercial & residential burglary, child pornography, counterfeiting, possession of firearms, possession of narcotics and murder.

Theft Investigation Response Services

Along with traditional theft recovery services, the Investigations team can be engaged for unique theft scenarios that may or may not require police involvement.  Note that these types of investigations focus on gaining intelligence around the theft and any other crimes that may have occurred.  Recovery of the device is not the objective.

Special Investigative Services

These are internal special investigation services above and beyond traditional theft recovery investigations. These services cater to corporations concerned about:

Internal investigations can include:

Early Case Assessment

The collection of data from a device including an option where the Investigations team will analyse the data and provide a summary.  The team can also provide a bulk download of the data for customers who prefer to conduct their own legal or forensic analysis.

Governance, Risk Management & Compliance

The Investigations team can monitor computer user activity and determine if company policies or government regulations are being violated.  Potential issues could include inappropriate or dangerous behaviour by the user, hours of use, password security, data access control, unauthorised use and other issues.

Integrity Testing

This service is used to identify and remove criminal elements.  Considered a typical bait strategy, a device is loaded with Computrace technology and left within the confines of a corporate office or property.  If the device goes missing, an investigation is launched.  Based on the evidence collected, the customer can take appropriate action.

Reporting

An Investigation Summary Report is provided and will include the device activities that occurred, detailed data forensically obtained from the device, a summary of the findings, and additional analysis by the Investigations team.  The report will also include recommendations that the customer can use to adjust their security processes and infrastructure to improve overall security and compliance.
